Renewable energy industries expanded during most of 2008, with large increases in manufacturing capacity, diversification of manufacturing locations, and shifts in leadership.[2] By August 2008, there were at least 160 publicly traded renewable energy companies with a market capitalization greater than $100 million. The number of companies in this category has expanded from around 60 in 2005.

Some $150 billion was invested in renewable energy globally in 2009, including new capacity (asset finance and projects) and biofuels refineries. This is more than double the 2006 investment figure of $63 billion. Almost all of the increase was due to greater investment in wind power, solar PV, and biofuels.[4]: 27

In 2000, venture capital (VC) investment in renewable energy was about 1% of total VC investment. In 2007 that figure was closer to 10%, with solar power alone making up about 3% of the entire Venture Capital asset class of ~$33B. More than 60 start-ups have been funded by VCs in the last three years.[5] Venture capital and private equity investments in renewable energy companies increased by 167 percent in 2006, according to investment analysts at New Energy Finance Limited.[6]

New investment into the sector jumped US$148 billion in 2007, up 60 per cent over 2006, noted a report by the Sustainable Energy Finance Initiative (SEFI). Wind energy attracted one-third of the new capital and solar one-fifth. But interest in solar is growing rapidly on the back of major technological advances which saw solar investment increase 254 per cent.[7] The IEA predicts US$20 trillion will be invested into alternative energy projects over the next 22 years.[7]

Does the register extend to overseas callers?

The Do Not Call Register legislation applies irrespective of where the call or fax originates. For example, telemarketers operating out of South Africa must comply with the legislation in the same way as telemarketers operating out of Melbourne. In practice, however, if an overseas telemarketer is found in breach of the legislation, the ACMA will pursue the Australian company linked to that telemarketer or fax marketer.

After our partial privatization in 2001, we were listed on the Oslo and New York stock exchanges, ensuring broad international ownership. Industris has one class of shares, with all shares carrying equal right to vote at general meetings.

What you need to know

The renewable-energy industry is the part of the energy industry focusing on new and appropriate renewable energy technologies. Investors worldwide have paid greater attention to this emerging industry in recent years. In many cases, this has translated into rapid renewable energy commercialization and considerable industry expansion. The wind power and solar photovoltaics (PV) industries provide good examples of this. Renewable energy industries expanded during most of 2008, with large increases in manufacturing capacity, diversification of manufacturing locations, and shifts in leadership.[2] By August 2008, there were at least 160 publicly traded renewable energy companies with a market capitalization greater than $100 million. The number of companies in this category has expanded from around 60 in 2005. Some $150 billion was invested in renewable energy globally in 2009, including new capacity (asset finance and projects) and biofuels refineries. This is more than double the 2006 investment figure of $63 billion. Almost all of the increase was due to greater investment in wind power, solar PV, and biofuels.[4]: 27 In 2000, venture capital (VC) investment in renewable energy was about 1% of total VC investment. In 2007 that figure was closer to 10%, with solar power alone making up about 3% of the entire Venture Capital asset class of ~$33B. More than 60 start-ups have been funded by VCs in the last three years.[5] Venture capital and private equity investments in renewable energy companies increased by 167 percent in 2006, according to investment analysts at New Energy Finance Limited.[6] New investment into the sector jumped US$148 billion in 2007, up 60 per cent over 2006, noted a report by the Sustainable Energy Finance Initiative (SEFI). Wind energy attracted one-third of the new capital and solar one-fifth. But interest in solar is growing rapidly on the back of major technological advances which saw solar investment increase 254 per cent.[7] The IEA predicts US$20 trillion will be invested into alternative energy projects over the next 22 years.[7]

As far back as the Luddite textile workers who destroyed weaving machinery at the start of the industrial revolution, there has been a fear that each technological advance in the workplace will lead to higher unemployment. But a study of census results in England – the birthplace of the first industrial revolution – reveals that the opposite is the case. Economists at Deloitte looked at the relationship between jobs and the rise of technology by trawling through census data for England and Wales going back to 1871. They found that instead of taking away work, technology was “the great job-creating machine”. This is because technology changed jobs rather than replaced them, removing demand for workers in one area and creating new demand for other roles. The study anticipates the same will happen in the Fourth Industrial Revolution: “Machines will take on more repetitive and laborious tasks, but seem no closer to eliminating the need for human labor than at any time in the last 150 years,” it concludes.

What you need to know

Our core competency is oil exploitation, which we define as the application of technology to increase the recovery of undrained oil in existing reservoirs. It is a technically complex business and each oil reservoir is treated differently depending on the interrelationships of the reservoir rock, fluids, pressures, wells and surface facilities. We work in all three phases of oil reservoir exploitation: primary, secondary and, more recently, tertiary recovery projects. Each reservoir requires multi-faceted reservoir evaluations and detailed exploitation plans. For the majority of our projects, we use 3D seismic, detailed geological interpretation, fluid flow reservoir engineering and operating data to characterize our oil reservoirs. Based on these assessments, we optimize or initiate reservoir recovery In a typical Alberta Plains South Mannville oil reservoir, primary production brings only about 15 percent of the original oil-in-place to the surface. The implementation of a waterflood improves recoveries, but still may only capture 40 percent of the original oil-in-place. Tertiary floods, based on chemicals, can increase the recovery of oil by another 12-15 percent.
